Gluttony

What is gluttony? Duscuss!

To get us started, here is the Merriam-Webster definition from their CD-Rom. I am not sure if it differs at all from the book form:

1. excess in eating or drinking
2. greedy or excessive indulgence

(BTW, I have been thinking a lot lately about greed. Soon I plan to do a post about greed so stay tuned!)

I think of it as consuming more than your body should handle. At least that's the way I see it with food. :-)

Someone said to me recently that gluttony is not just indulging to excess, but living in such a way to heighten the desire so the indulgence is even more "rewarding."

By this meaning, if I were simply to inadvertantly over-indulge occassionally as all animals are prone to doing, I am not necessarily a glutton. However, if I regularly use food as a reward to motivate myself, perhaps repeating "I DESERVE this!" as I enjoy it (whether its one cookie or an entire chocolate cake), then gluttony might be one of my vices.

Does that make sense?

I view gluttony, in general - not just with food, as a hyper-focus on my own desires with no regard for the consequences to myself or others.
